Clarify AS has provided dictionary and language tools to Norwegian schools for approximately 25 years. The service is used by nearly 1,000 schools and roughly 240,000 students and teachers, and is also utilized during tests and exams, where stability is critical. With a team of about two full-time equivalents behind the service, the platform must be self-sustaining. The goal was therefore not to fix something that wasn't broken, but to build a foundation for future growth: higher capacity, easier operations, and room for more languages and new markets.
We have worked with Clarify for several years, taking responsibility for the entire scope: technical architecture, development, user interface, license and administration systems, branding, logo, and websites.
We began with workshops to identify pain points in the existing service, then restructured the content and navigation based on who actually uses it and when. We then rebuilt the service from the ground up using a modern stack with Next.js and React. The architecture was designed for real-world peak loads in production, not just normal traffic. When many students log in simultaneously on a test or exam day, the system must scale in a controlled manner. Login, access management, licensing, and administration were rebuilt to be as automated as possible, allowing a small team to manage a large-scale service.
In our design process, we used AI to quickly explore visual directions. The student service itself does not use generative AI—a prerequisite for Clarify to be an approved aid for exams—so it was equally important that the aesthetic did not have a typical AI-generated feel. Illustrations and animations were drawn by hand. The result was a moderate rebranding: clearly modernized, yet still recognizable to the schools that have used Clarify for years. Responsibility was clearly divided between disciplines, with the developer taking primary responsibility for the app and advanced features, and the designer for the website as a content platform.

The result is a comprehensive language platform built on a modern technical stack. At its core is an advanced search engine that queries multiple dictionaries simultaneously, with integrations for services such as Store norske leksikon, Verbix, and text-to-speech. Users log in via Feide or email, and the system automatically delivers content tailored to their specific school or organization. Administrators have access to dedicated tools for managing users, organizations, and licenses. The website clearly distinguishes between prospective customers evaluating a purchase and existing users who rely on the service daily. The platform is significantly more robust and scalable than its predecessor. It handles high concurrent traffic during critical peak times, while remaining intuitive enough for a ten-year-old and fast enough for an experienced teacher. Clarify had the product, the users, the experience, and the ambition. We provided the technology and the execution power that made the next generation of the platform possible.
