Reduce scope 3 emissions during port visits for large ships

Project for
Wilhelmsen
Scope 3 emissions at port visits
Difficult to map
Ship managers do not have insight into third-party suppliers

Challenge

Port visits by large ships involve activities (and thus discharges) by third-party suppliers operating outside the direct control of the shipping company. This makes Scope 3 emissions particularly difficult to map and influence. Together with Wilhelmsen, we wanted to make these emissions more transparent and manageable. We wanted to give ship managers insight into emissions, costs and safety associated with local suppliers, so they could make informed choices, switch suppliers when needed and thus reduce the overall environmental impact of port visits.

Process

Our approach

We ran the project from problem understanding to piloted product — with responsibility for design, development, architecture, safety, product and project management. The process started with a thorough insight phase, where through workshops and interviews we identified user needs, opportunities and technical prerequisites. The insights formed the basis for idea development, prototyping and iterative design work in close collaboration with Wilhelmsen. In parallel, we built ongoing functionality in an agile development cycle, working closely across disciplines to ensure momentum, quality and user value.

Solution

The result

The result was Platforma 13 — a web application that puts real decision-making power in the hands of ship managers and operational users. The platform provides data on emissions, costs and safety related to local suppliers — and makes it possible to select a supplier even before arrival at port. The user gains valuable insight into the environmental footprint of different alternatives, and can make choices in line with their own priorities and company goals. The platform provides a complete overview throughout the entire process: from planning and supplier selection, to up-to-date information on actual costs and emissions after the port visit. The solution is integrated against Wilhelmsen's core systems to obtain information about future port calls.

By moving decisions earlier in the process and making environmental data available, Platform 13 supports both strategic and operational objectives. The result is better informed choices, increased transparency and real opportunities to influence Scope 3 emissions. The platform has been launched as a pilot in four ports globally, supporting supplier selection in crew change services such as land transport, launch hire and hotels.
